Drawing Gallery, TheBrick

For one evening, artist Hamley Jenkins is bringing together the very best of her works on paper in a show of recent originals for a special event at TheBrick, Clerkenwell, London. 25/10/22.

Drawing at live events over the past 8 years has led to an extended body of work inspired, in part, by the musical community here in London, some of whom will present on the evening. Expect live sounds and a few rounds!

Exhibition: ING Discerning Eye 2020

Well-renowned singer, performer and collector Beverley Knight selected the two portrait pieces shown above, the result of my residency at Jazz Live at the Crypt.
The third piece shown above was selected by artist Dale Lewis. It is based on a copy of a Michelangelo, ‘Leda and the Swan’ and features a visual reference to the Covid-19 virus in the form of a Black Swan, expressing my concerns about the financial impact upon future generations.

Camberwell Arts’ Lockdown Exhibition

Feb/March 2021 Camberwell Arts invited me to take part in an exhibition in shop windows during the Lockdown, so I decided to do an original piece in whitewash in the window of pub The Crooked Well. I changed the first pastiche I drew for mark Valentine's day (Chagall, Flying Lovers) for another when the schools reopened (Lowry, Coming out of School)

The wonderful people at the Painter Stainers Guild decided to put together an online show to raise funds for the artists they had worked with over the years and the charities they support as a guild. Artists were invited to submit 2 works to be made available for purchase at the set price of £300 each, with a third of the takings going to charity. Within days of the exhibition opening a lovely chap in Tunbridge Wells had bought my second version of ‘Parliament in Progress’

Project: Matthew's Neighbours

When the UK went into lockdown in March I wanted to do something constructive with this time to share with others that also fit in with my particular skillset. Having greatly enjoyed reading to my (now grown-up) children I decided to write, illustrate and narrate a story with empathy, tolerance and personal growth at its centre, and some gentle humour. The world can move a bit too fast for our young ones and just before bed is a great time to slow down. I tell this story straight to camera as if gossiping about the handful of characters that share the same block of flats as Matthew (who we never actually meet). A few scenes are selected from the story to be illustrated in black and white with occasional, basic, animation, harking back to children’s TV programmes in the 1970’s. Exhibition: Dulwich Festival Artists' Open House

When the music trustees for Jazz Live at the Crypt suggested I could exhibit in the venue I realised it was an opportunity to show paintings from the last 10 years, which is the period of time that I’ve been showing with Dulwich Festival Artists’ Open House, something I cannot do from my current home in the area.
During this time my intention has been to incorporate meaning in the work that will engage with the viewer and provide a point of departure for discussion. I have experimented with subject matter, technique, composition, the use of symbols and their impact on the subconscious. The result is a varied body of work that is both distinctive and unique, and this year my show at the Crypt was an overview of one painter’s journey through the last decade.
